How to Care for Your Golf Cart

Owner’s Manual
Your first step in any maintenance process should be to examine your owner’s manual. While we have some good general information and advice, your cart’s manual was written for your specific make and model. It will include recommended products, maintenance schedules, and possibly a maintenance log so you can track maintenance performed and parts replaced. If you can’t find your manual, the manufacturer’s website should have a copy you can download or print.
Tire Check
Like any vehicle, your golf cart’s tires are vital for safe and efficient movement. If they’re over- or under-inflated, they won’t have the proper traction and your motor will have to work harder for the same amount of movement. Use a tire pressure gauge and check that each tire’s pressure is at the level recommended in your owner’s manual, and adjust any that aren’t. Then check that the tread level isn’t too low and that all tires’ tread is wearing down at an even rate.
Brake Inspection
Your brakes ensure you can stop when and where you want to, which is pretty important. Start by inspecting the pedal to ensure it moves properly and doesn’t stick or grind. Next, remove the drum, which is the part connected to the wheel, to examine its internal components. Make sure the shoes are at least 1 mm thick and evenly worn, then use a brake cleaner on the bracket system and springs if necessary.
Squeaky brakes are normal when it’s wet out, but if they squeak in dry weather, the drum may need cleaning as well. Grinding noises are never a good sign and should be addressed by a professional immediately.
Lights and Mirrors
If your golf cart is street-legal, you’ll also need to care for the lights and mirrors. Turn signals, headlights, and brake lights should be tested regularly for proper function. The mirrors should be clean and provide a clear view behind you and to either side.
