Maintaining Your Batteries
One of the most important things is maintaining the batteries properly. A couple of time a month give the batteries and connecting cables a good cleaning. During the cleaning check to make sure all cables are secure. A loose cable can melt down battery posts in just a few minutes.
Golf Cart Batteries should be put on a charger even if they have been used for only a short amount of time. Even if you only take a ride over to the neighbor's house and back, plug the cart back in. The battery charger is automatic and will turn off when batteries are fully charged.
** GOLF CART BATTERIES NEED TO KEEP A VERY PRECISE WATER LEVEL TO OPERATE AT THEIR BEST. LOW WATER LEVELS CAN SHORTEN THEIR LIFE AND PERMANENTLY DAMAGE THE LEAD PLATES INSIDE EACH CELL **
- Check the water level at least once per month.
- Always keep the water at 1/4" to 1/2" above the lead metal plates.
- Distilled Water Only! Don't use tap water, as it has chemicals and minerals that can do damage. Low water can cause plates to overheat during a charging cycle and start a fire.
- Charging Batteries produce hydrogen gas. Noises like gurgling and bubbling will normally be heard.
- A foul odor may be present when batteries are charging. This is normal.
**Each Battery is connected with a cable to the top post with a nut securing it to the stud. Under normal driving conditions these cable nuts can vibrate and loosen. When this occurs the metal cable, ends up moving up and down the battery post stud can create an arc. This arc can actually melt the battery post which can completely damage the battery. It is important when checking the water levels in your batteries, to also tighten the cable nuts. This is properly done by taking a wrench and snugging the nut down on the post. You only want to snug the nut (Careful not to over tighten) because the battery post is made of lead - and over tightening them can break the post.**
